You’ve turned the heating on, the boiler is running and most of the house is warming up – but one radiator remains stubbornly cold.
The way in which a radiator is cold can actually provide useful clues about what might be happening.
Radiator Cold at the Top
A radiator that is warm at the bottom but cold across the top often contains trapped air.
Bleeding the radiator may resolve the problem, although repeatedly needing to bleed radiators can indicate another issue within the system.
Radiator Cold at the Bottom
Cold areas along the bottom can sometimes be associated with a build-up of debris or sludge inside the radiator or heating system.
Over time, contaminants can restrict the movement of hot water and reduce heating performance.
Simply bleeding the radiator won’t normally solve this type of problem.
One Radiator Completely Cold
If every other radiator works normally, the problem may be local to that radiator.
Possible causes include a stuck thermostatic radiator valve, another closed valve or a circulation problem.
Several Radiators Aren’t Heating Properly
When several radiators remain cold or only partially heat up, the problem may involve the wider central heating system.
The system may require balancing, there could be circulation issues or the boiler itself may not be operating correctly.
Upstairs Hot but Downstairs Cold or Vice Versa
If one part of the property consistently warms faster than another, your system may need balancing.
Balancing adjusts the flow of water around the heating circuit so that radiators receive an appropriate share of the available heat.
Should You Keep Turning the Boiler Temperature Up?
Not necessarily.
If hot water isn’t circulating correctly through a radiator, increasing the boiler temperature doesn’t address the underlying cause and could simply use more energy.
When Should You Call a Heating Engineer?
If bleeding a radiator doesn’t resolve the issue, pressure keeps changing or several radiators aren’t heating properly, it is worth having the system investigated.
A heating engineer can determine whether the issue lies with the radiator, valves, circulation, boiler or condition of the heating system.
