Radiator FAQs
It depends on the size of the room, how many windows and external walls it has, and how well it's insulated. A radiator that's too small will struggle to heat the room, so we work out the heat output each room needs before recommending a radiator.
Most leaks come from the valves, the joints where the radiator connects to the pipework, or corrosion in the radiator itself. If you notice a leak, put a towel underneath and close both valves if you can, then get in touch so we can find the source and repair or replace what's needed.
Gurgling usually means air is trapped in the radiator. Banging or knocking can point to sludge, a pump problem or pipes expanding as they heat up. If bleeding the radiator doesn't fix it, the cause may be elsewhere in your central heating system.
Only when you notice cold spots at the top, or hear gurgling. With the heating off and the radiators cool, open the bleed valve with a radiator key until water appears, then close it. If you have a sealed system, check the boiler pressure afterwards, as bleeding can lower it.
Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) let you set a different temperature for each room, so you're not heating rooms you don't use. They're a simple way to improve comfort and cut wasted energy, and they can usually be fitted to existing radiators.
Older radiators can lose efficiency as sludge and corrosion build up inside. Modern radiators, sized correctly for each room, heat up faster and distribute heat more evenly. If the problem is sludge throughout the system, a power flush may be the better first step.
