Autumn Leaves and Blocked Drains: How to Protect Your Drains This Autumn

Drain unblocking and repair

Autumn brings plenty of colour to the garden – and plenty of leaves into gutters, gullies and outdoor drains.

A few leaves might not appear to be much of a problem, but when mixed with mud and other debris they can form dense blockages that prevent rainwater draining effectively.

With wetter weather becoming more common through autumn and winter, keeping external drainage clear is worthwhile.

Clear Leaves From Drain Covers

Regularly remove fallen leaves from around external drains and gullies.

Don’t wait until the drain is completely covered. Once wet leaves begin breaking down, they can compact and become much harder to remove.

Keep Gutters and Downpipes Clear

Blocked guttering can cause rainwater to overflow down walls or collect around the base of the property.

Check gutters periodically and make sure downpipes can discharge freely.

Watch How Quickly Water Drains

After heavy rain, take a look at external drains.

Water should disappear reasonably quickly rather than sitting around the grate for long periods.

Standing or slowly draining water can be an early indication of a developing blockage.

Don’t Push Debris Into the Drain

Removing surface leaves is sensible.

Pushing them through the grate simply moves the problem further into the drainage system where it may be much harder to reach.

Watch for Other Warning Signs

Drain problems aren’t always confined to the outside of the house.

You may also notice:

  • sinks or baths draining slowly
  • unpleasant smells from drains
  • gurgling noises
  • toilets behaving unusually
  • water backing up around external gullies.

These can indicate that a blockage is developing further along the system.

When Should You Call a Drainage Specialist?

If water is already backing up, several drains are affected or a blockage continually returns, professional investigation is worthwhile.

The issue may be further along the pipework than can be reached using normal household methods.
