Are Your Heating Controls Costing You Money?

The Ultimate Winter Home Heating Checklist: Ensuring Efficiency and Safety

Your boiler might be working perfectly, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re using your heating efficiently.

Thermostats, timers and radiator controls determine when your home is heated and, in some cases, which rooms receive that heat.

If they’re poorly set up, faulty or no longer suited to your routine, you may be heating your home when you don’t need to.

Check Your Heating Schedule

Your routine may have changed since your heating programme was originally set.

If nobody is home during certain periods, check whether the heating is still programmed to run unnecessarily.

Equally, make sure the property has time to warm before you need it rather than setting excessively high temperatures in an attempt to heat it more quickly.

Is Your Thermostat in the Right Place?

A thermostat needs to measure a reasonably representative temperature.

If it is affected by unusual heat, draughts or its immediate surroundings, the heating may switch on or off at inappropriate times.

Use Radiator Controls Properly

Thermostatic radiator valves can help regulate individual rooms.

Rooms that are used infrequently don’t always need to be maintained at the same temperature as main living areas.

However, controls need to be working correctly for this to be useful.

Consider Whether Your Controls Are Outdated

Older heating systems may have relatively basic controls compared with the options now available.

Programmable and smart controls can give households much greater flexibility over heating schedules.

That doesn’t mean every property needs the latest technology, the important thing is having controls that suit the system and how the household actually uses it.

Don’t Forget the Heating System Itself

Controls can’t compensate for a boiler fault, poor circulation or radiators that aren’t heating correctly.

If you’re having to continually increase the thermostat just to keep the property comfortable, there may be another problem worth investigating.
